This piece conveys the turbulent and oppressive reality of the 2021 Nicaraguan elections. The elections were widely regarded as being fraught with irregularities and rife with intimidation tactics, leading to widespread condemnation from international observers.
The artwork depicts a group of Nicaraguan police officers, clad in riot gear, blocking a voting ballot box, and denying the people's democratic right to vote. The police officers are captured in a moment of intense confrontation, with their hostile and intimidating expressions conveying the sense of fear and oppression that characterized the election process.
The piece is particularly poignant in its depiction of the Nicaraguan government's crackdown on political dissent in the lead-up to the election. Many political candidates were arrested, including seven opposition presidential candidates, and dozens of political activists were detained. The government's crackdown on opposition voices led to widespread international condemnation, with many countries and human rights organizations calling for an end to the human rights abuses.
